For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted a dog (and a rabbit, since we’re on the subject of pets). I wasn’t fussy and didn’t have a particular breed in mind – just something I could put a lead on and take for a walk.
But owing to the fact my mum is not a dog person and my dad was in the military, meaning there was always the potential to live in flats and overseas, a dog was never going to be on the cards.
Now I’m a grown-up I still want a dog, and I know exactly what I’d have: a black pug called Daphne or Delilah who I picture sitting at my feet while I’m working, or possibly on my lap (not that I’ve day dreamed at all!)
Sadly we’re still a few years off being in a position to have a dogΒ since we live in a 4th floor flat where dogs are banned, but we’re half way there as I work from home so as soon as we have a gardenΒ or ground-floor accessΒ it will be do-able.
I always think there must be so many benefits to growing up with a pet dog in terms of teaching kids about responsibility, so when dad-of-two Mathews McGarry got in touch and offered to write a guest post about 5 reasons why every family should have a dog I was more than happy to collaborate.
Here’s what Mathews says:
5 reasons why every family should have a dog
βI want a puppy!β
Every parent has probably heard that one a few dozen times, but have you ever really stopped to consider the positives behind fulfilling your childβs biggest desire? Dogs are not just a cuddly pet: their presence in the house is beneficial for everyone in the family in more ways than one. A canine is a promise of superior home safety 24/7 and better physical, mental, and emotional well-being for all family members. On top of that, a fido can also help teach your child precious lessons about responsibility, compassion, and healthy eating. For example, feeding your dog good quality food like Badlands Ranch, which is air-dried, in turn teaches them about the importance of maintaining a diet rich in nutrients – whether you’re human or canine. Check out these five sweet pluses youβll be getting by adopting a family member in the furry guise.
1. Cleanup made easy
Most people think that a dog is synonymous with regular cleanups: and it certainly is. With a dog at home, youβll finally be able to take a nap after a meal instead of having to mop the dining room floor right away. Your kid dropped a slice of jam-covered bread on the carpet? Soup got spilt on the tiles? A mouthful of broccoli landed on the floor? The dog will take care of it eagerly (and unlike your spouse, it wonβt complain about the food being too cold or too salty).
2. An extra hour of blissful silence
Dogs are not indoor animals by nature, and your kids will have to take the pet out for a walk and a game of fetch at least once a day. This means a few extra moments of blissful silence for you as the tired parent, as well as an extra hour of physical activity for your tireless offspring. And if you have a habit of shirking workouts, the dog will instantly evolve into your personal drill sergeant who will cajole you into taking a walk even when you feel completely drained: you just canβt say no to those big puppy eyes.
3. Taking the social game up a notch
Your child is timid and keeps to himself in the playground? Studies show that autistic kids can significantly improve social skills with a therapy dog at the end of the leash. In cases of non-autistic children, fidos can provide emotional support and help the child gradually overcome their fear of social contact. With a canine by their side, even the shyest of kids will feel more at ease because their playmate will always be ready to play.
4. You are loved, no questions asked
Being a grownup is tough, and it only gets tougher once the kids arrive. Unlike your mum or best friend who may look down on you for complaining about the weight of adulthood, your canine will never judge you, and they will always be there to listen to your monologues about world injustice, sorrow, or work stress without criticism. We all feel powerless sometimes and we all need to cry once in a while β but psychotherapy is rather costly, whereas the unconditional love, understanding, and patience your dog will always be happy to give you are free of charge.
5. Quality outdoor time for family, pets included
Screen addiction is the disease of the 21st century, and kids are not the only ones who spend hours glued to the screen. You too are probably wasting precious time watching TV or staring at your phone. With a dog onboard, improved fitness and more quality time outdoors will come into the spotlight for the whole family in a matter of weeks: without thinking, you will be putting on your gym wear andΒ trainers at the end of the day and rushing out to the park with your pet and kids trailing behind. For bonus points, you can use your pet to teach your kids valuable lessons about duty, empathy, and sharing. Why not dump dog-care tasks such as grooming, feeding, and vet appointments in the kidsβ lap and let them learn how to handle responsibilities as youβre indulging in extra me time? Every family needs a guardian angel, and your pet is precisely that β only it has a wagging tail in place of wings.

I really agree with this post. We have 2 dogs and my son really loves them. He’s only 8 months old but he smiles and cuddles them. I think they also helped to teach him to crawl and get him moving. Seeing their relationship grow is heartwarming. #marvmondays
Our dog is such an important part of our family. As well as providing opportunities to get out and about more, he is a great companion and a comforter.
some fab reasons here! although we have 4 cats so no chance haha! #MarvMondays
Sadly we can’t have a dog as Holly is allergic. But hopefully we will get a cat on the future . #marvmondays
I don’t have a dog. I wouldn’t have the time to have one now with two kids and a baby on the way. I wouldn’t have the patience or time for the dog so it would be pretty unfair to get a dog.
#MarvMondays
I’m not a dog person at all, I think they are too much of a tie if you’re out of the house all day which we both are. That said, I can see why people love them! #MarvMondays
Love this post. We love dogs, and this post is spot on. Unfortunately we lost our 12 year old choccy lab last month and I am already missing the walks, even the conversation of convincing the kids to go, bribing them with sweets. Because I knew as soon as we got out and down to the beach the girls wouldn’t want to come home again because everyone was having so much fun. Oh and I’m definitely missing the doggy Hoover picking up all the dropped food, don’t think I’ve used the real Hoover so much. #MarvMonday
I must admit I’ve not had a dog, we have a pet cat and that’s enough for me, though I would like the dog walking part. #MarvMondays
When we got our puppy, 7 months ago, I definitely didn’t consider how hard it would be to teach him to do his buisness outside, to stop him from pinching the kids toys and it’s still a struggle to remind him that the sofa isn’t a chew toy. But, we have so much fun with him and the kids love our daily walks together, even if it is just a walk around the block! Lovely post! #TwinklyTuesday
Ohh I would love a dog but that can be such a lot of work. Also with baby number 2 on the way now really isn’t an ideal time to get a puppy. Maybe in a couple of years though. These are all great reasons to get a puppy. I hope you get your little Daphne or Delia one day xx #TwinklyTuesday
Completley agree with this, we have always had dogs and I wouldn’t be without one. Our children LOVE our dog, so much so that they truly believe that he is their brother and that I gave birth to him….!! I love that he is always there, even when the children are out and I’m in the house on my own, he’s just padding around, sitting with me for company, someone I can cuddle and keep my feet warm! #TwinklyTuesday
I totally agree that pets are beneficial. We’d love a dog but aren’t quite in a position to commit yet. We’ve got 2 cats which we’ve had since kittens and our little girl adores them. When she started school, she used to tell them all about her day. It was lovely to hear! #marvmondays
Ah you are right a dog (or two) does have a positive effect on the whole family. For sure the clean-up thing is one of the top reasons and the unconditional love of course! #marvmondays
Ah we’ve been talking recently about maybe getting a dog, although like you not immediately but in the next few years. Really helpful list, particularly the points around childrens social and emotional development which we hadnt really considered! Thanks for sharing this #MarvMondays. Emily
I love the idea of a pet for my daughter to grow up with, they’re so good for teaching love, responsibility, loss, etc. But dogs are such a tie and invariably smell! I’m more of a cat person myself! X

Couldn’t agree more. We have a well loved but extremely naughty beagle called Nova who we love more than anything. She is a massive part of the family and we wouldn’t be without her. She made a massive difference to my autistic son and dogs are being used more now as helpers for children with autism. So many positives! #thelist
I just love that pug photo! A schoolfriend of DS and his dad cycle to school with their pug in front basket. Think he’s like a second son. I used to have a dog and when he died just before i met my now husband, he (husband) said if dog had still been alive there’d have been no place for him in my life. Sad but possibly true. #TheList
I was never allowed a dog as a child either and would LOVE one. It sounds like we’re in the same boat as we’re in a top floor flat too (3rd) and I’m already struggling up and down the stairs with a newborn strapped to my front, a backpack on my back and a fearless 20m old who I need to stop hurtling down the stairs. Unless I get a dog small enough to fit in my pocket (with the trend for tiny handbag dogs these days who knows!)
One day… For all the great reasons you’ve outlined above – mainly the sweeper upper characteristics of course, lol!
