I recently wrote a post about 10 of the best breakthrough parenting moments, featuring all the things that are real breakthroughs at the time, like being able to leave the house without everything but the kitchen sink and putting away the highchair youβve come to loathe owing to all its crevices and straps.
It occurred to me, though, that lots of the points I made were negative, focusing on the aspects of parenting I hate instead of the bits I love.
So when BritMums got in touch to see if Iβd be interested in taking part in their #PetitsFilousFirsts challenge, a campaign championing babies βfirstsβ, I thought yes! I should be celebrating these milestone moments instead of being glad some of them are over (although Iβll never be sorry about seeing the back of a highchair).
I started thinking about Little Bβs βfirstsβ, and while there are so many itβs hard to narrow them down, Iβve come up with 10 of the best baby firsts Iβve loved the most:
1. The first trip to the pub. You might think this oneβs for teenagers, but not in our house. Iβm not ashamed to admit it, I was gasping for a white wine spritzer by the time BB and Little B came along. In both cases we went for a pub lunch the following day.
2. The first bath. A nervous and fractious affair, thereβs nothing like the smell of clean milky baby afterwards.
3. The first smile. When all those sleepless nights and worrying are rewarded with the first proper glimpse of the little person your baby will become.
4. Their first strawberry. This has been priceless on both occasions for us and is a first I will always remember.
5. Their first taste of yoghurt. A bit like the strawberry, nothing beats the look on their face the first time they taste a spoonful of yoghurt. And the funny thing is they still react the same way a year or so later.
For the purpose of this post weβve been trying out My First Petits Filous, which is a low-sugar, vanilla flavour weaning fromage frais which is suitable from six months and isΒ made mainly of milk. Hereβs what Little B makes of itβ¦
6. The first holiday. Although you can now only use the term βholidayβ loosely, you only ever remember the best bits.
7. Their first trip to the beach. Sandy toes and pretty much the only place where itβs safe to go nappy-free, the look of delight on their face is priceless.
8. Their first ice cream. A lot like the strawberry and yoghurt, itβs the facial expression that makes this into my top ten.
9. Their first pair of Wellingtons.Β I know theΒ first pair of shoes are a milestone moment, but the first pair of Wellingtons are even more fun because it meansΒ it’s time for muddy puddles and splashing.
10. Their first birthday. You made it through the first 12 months unscathed – what better cause for celebration?
Of course there are lots more best baby firsts, but these have to be my favourite. How about you? What are your favourite baby firsts?

Ah lovely firsts. I loved all of these with my girls, but as my eldest got older the first time she said ‘I love you mummy’ was the best. We are big fans of petit filous x #Marvmondays
The first time they say mummy is great too – and daddy of course!!
A lovely post. I love the facial expression when eating the yogurt. Priceless. #fartglitter
The facial expressions with fruit are great too – especially raspberries!!
Great facial expressions! #MarvMondays
You couldn’t make them up!
Great post. I can’t wait to go through all this again π Totally get what you mean with number 1. When I had my second, I had some WKD bottles in the fridge waiting haha! That first bottle was so nice, took me a few hours to drink one though haha. #MarvMondays
I was a total lightweight after both my were born – a very cheap date indeed!!
This made me smile as I recalled all the wonderful things that have happened over the last year or so. I loved the first time my little one actively sought me out for a cuddle Really looking forward to the welly milestone!
And when they first hold their arms up to be picked up – that’s priceless too!
Oops forgot to add #MarvMondays – sorry!
Thanks so much for popping by!x
Aww what a great idea for a post, people often focus too much on the negative bits of being a parent so this is lovely. Love the face when eating the strawberry and yoghurt.x #marvondays
I often tend to focus on bad bits of parenting so I really enjoyed writing a positive post for once!!
Most of these are all up there – I loved seeing my two trying Brocolli for the first time and the first time the boys actually played together! If I started writing a list I wouldn’t be able to stop haha #marvmondays xx
I was a bit like that too but had to narrow it down to 10 otherwise the list would have been endless!
Love the smell of a baby after their bath! You just never forget that smell. The first time we took daughter 3 to the beach, she fell into the sand face down and I was frantically turning her upside down to remove sand! Not such a good first for her! Alison x #fartglitter
And sand seems to get everywhere doesn’t it! Luckily we have a pebbly beach here so it’s not too bad…
Oh love the firsts! Especially yogurts and ice-cream haha. The first time both of my tots wore wellies was pretty hillarious as they both tried to walk in them (you would think I had filled each one with bricks!) We’re big fans of Petit Filous in this house – love the sound of vanilla ones!
Thanks for linking up with #fartglitter x
Yes it took mine a while to learn to walk in wellies too – I guess they must feel pretty weird to little people!
Aw I have all this to come again! My daughter screamed through her first bath as we did it too cold! Oops! She also love strawbs but hates them now?! What? Xx
Both of mine hated their first baths, although Little B quickly loved them and I think it’s because he was born in water…
Aww love this..I can’t wait to experience all these firsts again with baby number 2. The first taste of ice cream face is priceless! My boys nearly 3 and still pulls the funniest faces while eating ice cream xx #TwinklyTuesday
BB’s four and still pulls funny faces with ice cream – to be honest I probably do too!!
Oh such a lovely post and the smiles on the photos and the general expressions are just brilliant π #TwinklyTuesday
I know, all these photos are priceless for me!!
You really had me reminiscing about all of my two girls firsts! The sad thing is at 13 and 9 I’m also starting to experience some of their lasts ‘last day at primary school’, ‘last time I can pick you up and cuddle you.’ Cherish every precious moment. Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures and experiences. #TwinklyTuesday
Yes that is sad! I’ll be sad when we get there too…
First tastes of sour/super sweet foods is definitely one to remember isn’t it! #TwinklyTuesday
I probably should have mentioned chocolate too…
My favorite first has always been the first time they sleep through the night! π
That hasn’t happened with Little B yet but when it does that will be my fave too!
Awww this is gorgeous. Such lovely firsts…. our where her first time on a plane at around 5 months, and those first teeth were a huge one for us it totally changed her face. thanks for sharing #TwinklyTuesday
We’re taking Little B on a plane for the first time this summer – I can’t say I’m looking forward to it!!
I remember all these firsts and many more. And of course there will be more firsts to come – every year i imagine. I think that’s one of the things I love about having children, all the new things that happen. Life is truly never the same again. #twinklytuesday
Life is never the same again and there’s never a dull moment either!!
Great to hear special firsts. Commenting for myself and on behalf of BritMums and thanking you for taking part
No problem – it was fun to take part!x
Really lovely firsts. We did the Petit Filous Firsts challenge too and it was lovely to look back on and remember some of their best firsts. There are so many to pick from, its hard to narrow it down, but you’ve choosen some lovely ones π Thanks for linking it up to #MarvMondays. Emily
I probably could have written 20 ‘firsts’ but I didn’t want to bore!
I love this. Made my heart go squish, ooh, love! It’s good to be reminded of all the special moments on this sometimes difficult road we call parenting! Thanks for the reminder. #justanotherlinky
So pleased it made your heart go ‘squish’!!
Ooh do many to choose from, first tooth, first step and my all time favourite- first time tbey sleep through!!! (Obviously you still wake up every hour to check they’re breathing). Like the sound of the low sugar yogs, perfect little treat x #justanotherlinky
Sadly Little B hasn’t slept through the night yet, worst luck…
I love the picture of you guys with the first bath the most. Fresh smelling babies always smell good. Those Wellingtons are too cute. Great set of first!
I’ve always found the first bath quite stressful I have to say!! But all’s good afterwards!
Popping back from #justanotherlinky. Thanks for linking up xx
Thank you!xx
I can’t wait to go through these stages again with my baby boy next month!
Thank you for linking up to #justanotherlinky
